Anne Pritchard - Number 9 Reviews

Laced with humour and a dash of romance for Panama from an unexpected source, this futuristic detective novel is an exciting excursion into a frightening make-believe future which could possibly come true.

Think Blade Runner (the original) meets Fahrenheit 451 meets our own increasingly disturbing and intrusive tech-obsessed world. Ned is a very engaging character, funny, smart, and appealing in his relationships with the other characters who are also very well developed. You find yourself becoming emotionally invested in each of them, even the most minor, which I think is a sign of good writing and a good story.

While it sounds depressing, it is not, as Ned does not give up and is on the case, an unlikely possible hero on this particular world stage, but a man the reader will root for as he plunges ahead against seemingly impossible odds. Seldom does such food for thought combine with straight-out entertainment. I highly recommend.

While I read few novels in the SciFi genre, this one reached out and grabbed me. Probably because it wasn't full of doom and gloom but made me laugh. While the Chinese have taken over the world, Ned Panama lives a ho-hum life in London, until he's called in to help the techno-monopolized authorities uncover a possible insurrection. He pitches his old gum-shoe detective capabilities against the newest computer technologies and comes out on top. My hats off to the Panama!

MERRY CHRISTMAS
